Kelley's only public art project comprises two parts: a full scale replica of Kelley's childhood home, which permanently resides at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit; and a mobile section, a facade on wheels which carries out public service. For the first time, this traveling section is activated outside of Detroit, as part of MIKE KELLEY, the largest exhibition of the late artist's work to date, on site at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, hosting social services and community groups through July 28, 2014.
Kelley was ambivalent about public art, believing it was often foisted upon a public that did not want it. The visual paradox of the completed "Mobile Homestead," of a suburban ranch house passing through urban landscapes, would come to embody that tension. "This project, to me, seems to talk a lot about the role of art in society, not only in the public domain, but the role of the artist," says Stevens.
