Media artist Erik Loyer uses tactile and performative interfaces to tell stories with interactive media. His work has been exhibited online and internationally at venues including Artport at the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Prix Ars Electronica; Transmediale; and IndieCade.
In this interview, Loyer tells the stories behind "The Lair of Marrow Monkey," his website created in 1998, and now part of the permanent collection of SFMOMA, and "Strange Rain," his best-selling, critically acclaimed iPad app. Loyer identifies a similarity between his work and music—a form of art that does not require, but is enriched by, prior knowledge.
"I think of games as instruments," says Loyer. "Something that is constrained and has a particular idea or set of things it wants to get across, but you can also perform it in a lot of different ways."
